We are seeking qualifications from artists who have experience working in the public realm, as well as from artists for whom the project would represent an expansion of their practice. Artists will be selected through a two-part process. Artists are invited to submit their qualifications and interest by March 2nd. A short list of artists will then be invited to present proposals to a selection panel, and the public in early April. The exhibition will open in September, 2013 and run through July, 2014. DEADLINE FOR 2013-14 CYCLE: MARCH 25, 2013, MIDNIGHT
http://rocketgrants.org/about/applicationinfo/ The Rocket Grants program was launched in 2009 by the Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City, MO and the KU Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, KS, in partnership with the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The program aims to fuel the energy of the Kansas City regional visual arts community by encouraging and supporting innovative, public-oriented work in non-traditional spaces. Rocket Grants enable individuals and groups of artists to take new risks with their work, push the scope and scale of their activities, develop and pursue collaborative projects, and engage with the public and public realm in inventive and meaningful ways. With the specific goals of developing new kinds of audiences and providing frameworks for the growth of further experimentation, awarded projects create unconventional and expansive forms of interaction, exchange, provocation, and surprise. Now in its third year, the Rocket Grants program has awarded $121,000 in direct funds to thirty projects, involving at least seventy-two artists working in multiple media. Hundreds of other artists have been integrally and peripherally included in the performances, publications, workshops, artist-run spaces, videos, public installations, events and websites that the awards have funded. To learn more about this program and the projects supported byRocket Grants please explore this site. The Andy Warhol Foundation has invested in the creation of a growing national network of regional re-granting programs – supporting Alternative Exposure in San Francisco, California; The Idea Fund in Houston, Texas; and The Propeller Fund in Chicago, Illinois in addition to the Rocket Grants program. The Foundation aims to support the independent creative activity of artists by partnering with leading artist-centered, visual arts organizations across the country. On behalf of a public art initiative for the city of Warrensburg, Missouri, the Warrensburg Arts Commission (WAC) seeks a two-dimensional design for a 10-foot diameter etched concrete circle that will be permanently installed in the sidewalk on Pine Street in historic downtown Warrensburg. PROJECT INTENT/SITE During the last ten years, almost one million dollars has been invested to improve the aesthetics and infrastructure in Warrensburg’s downtown district. Improvements include the street surfaces; new 8’ wide concrete sidewalks with 2’ wide brick pavers on the outside edge of the sidewalks; and upgraded electrical, sewer, storm water, landscaping, signage, water, gas, cable, and phone services. In the center of the Arts and Entertainment District of Pine Street in downtown Warrensburg, a 10-foot diameter concrete circle will be laid in the sidewalk on the north side of Pine Street. A professional concrete etching company will reproduce the winning design on the circle. Please see the architectural rendering of the site on our Facebook page. THEME/STYLE There is no pre-determined theme for artwork, but WAC suggests that the content reflect the vibrancy of downtown, the beauty of the region, and the energy of the Arts and Entertainment District. Whether your design is abstract or representational, we encourage you to create a design unaccompanied by a dog, bomber, or mule. Please see a selection of example images on our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/groups/504736136206326) or at www.burgarts.com. PROJECT FUNDS An honorarium of $500 will be awarded for the chosen design. WAC and the City of Warrensburg shall also have the option of making no selection. In this event, a new selection process may be initiated or the project abandoned. The award funds are made available through the WAC and the City of Warrensburg. OWNERSHIP The design for the circle becomes property of the City of Warrensburg. The artist shall retain copyright to the work and will grant WAC and the City of Warrensburg a license to display the work and create and distribute reproductions of the work, including digital and photographic images for archival and promotional purposes. APPLICATION/SELECTION PROCESS This is an open competition for non-professional and professional artists. There is no entry fee to submit your work. A team of artists is welcome to apply, and multiple applications are allowed. The Warrensburg Arts Commission and the City of Warrensburg selected design will be based on creativity, appropriateness, and practicality for implementation. PROJECT TIMELINE Applications due: April 5, 2013 Notification of selected design by June 1, 2013 Implementation: Summer 2013 The Carnegie Center for Art & History and the New Albany Urban Enterprise Association are accepting proposals from artists for the 2013 New Albany Public Art Project: Bicentennial Series. The submission deadline is January 3, 2013!
Each selected artist or artist team will receive an honorarium of $4,000. Three artists or teams will be selected from the proposals to create outdoor artworks that will be installed in the Spring of 2013 to remain on view for two years. Each selected artwork will interpret one of the following historic themes: Clubs & Organizations, Culinary Arts, Museums & History, Performing Arts & Entertainment or Visual Arts & Artists. Attention must be paid to this aspect of the project, as interpretation of the chosen theme and historical appropriateness will be a factor in the selection process. While artists must interpret the theme in a way that is accurate to that history, we are not looking for literal displays of the theme, but rather unique and innovative interpretations of one or more aspects of the theme.
